Braces can look like one complicated piece of hardware, but each visible part has a fairly simple job. In traditional fixed braces, brackets attach to individual teeth, an archwire connects them, and smaller ties or bands help hold or direct the system.
Brackets: the small anchors
Brackets are the small metal or ceramic pieces bonded to the front of teeth. Each bracket has a slot that holds the archwire. The bracket is an anchor point, but it does not work alone: the wire and the orthodontist’s treatment plan determine how forces are applied.
Archwires: the connecting guide
The archwire runs through the brackets across the upper or lower dental arch. It helps guide tooth movement by applying controlled force. Archwires come in different shapes and sizes, and an orthodontist may change or adjust them as treatment progresses.
That does not mean every wire change follows the same schedule or produces the same result. Tooth movement and treatment timing are individualized.
Molar bands and tubes
A molar band is a metal ring fitted around a back tooth. It can provide strength and anchorage for the appliance. A small buccal tube attached to a molar band may hold an archwire or another orthodontic component.
Not every person has the same combination of bands, tubes, brackets, or other appliances. The parts used depend on the treatment plan.
Ligatures and clips: holding the wire in place
Many braces use a ligature—a tiny elastic ring or a thin wire—to hold the archwire in a bracket slot. Some brackets use a built-in clip or door instead. These parts keep the wire seated; they are not the same as the larger elastics used to connect upper and lower teeth.
Elastics: an additional direction of force
Orthodontic elastics are small rubber bands that may connect brackets on the upper and lower teeth. They add force in a direction chosen by the orthodontist, often to help address bite relationships. Their arrangement and wear instructions are specific to the treatment plan.
Do not copy someone else’s elastic pattern or change the way you wear them. If an elastic breaks, is lost, or causes an unexpected problem, contact the orthodontic office for instructions.
How the parts work together
The bracket provides a tooth-level attachment. The archwire links the brackets and supplies guidance. Bands or tubes can provide support at the back of the mouth, while ligatures, clips, and elastics help hold or direct the system. The orthodontist changes components or their placement when the treatment needs to progress.
Because braces create extra surfaces and spaces, daily brushing and interdental cleaning matter. A loose bracket, displaced wire, or unusual discomfort is a reason to contact the orthodontic team rather than trying to adjust the appliance yourself.
