If cold water, sweet foods, or brushing gives you a quick “zing,” a toothpaste labeled for sensitivity may seem like a simple fix. It can help some people—but it does not work by rebuilding every sensitive tooth or by identifying why the pain is happening.
Desensitizing toothpastes are designed to reduce pain associated with exposed, sensitive dentin. Supported formulas generally take one of two approaches: they limit the pathway that carries a trigger through dentin, or they reduce how strongly the nerve responds. Why exposed dentin can feel sensitive

Desensitizing toothpaste often requires repeated applications before sensitivity is reduced. It is not necessarily a one-brushing test.
Follow the directions on the specific package. Do not assume that using more paste, brushing harder, or applying it more often will make it work faster. Gentle brushing still matters, especially when the sensitive area is near the gumline.
