If you are choosing between stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride toothpaste, you do not need to treat one ingredient as the universal winner. Both are established fluoride compounds used to help prevent cavities. The more useful question is what the complete toothpaste is designed and supported to do.

What both fluoride compounds have in common

That evidence supports a possible desensitizing benefit for appropriate formulas. It does not show that every sensitive sensation comes from exposed dentin, that every stannous formula works the same way, or that sodium fluoride toothpaste can never be formulated for sensitivity.

Why sodium fluoride is not “the basic version”
Sodium fluoride is an established anticavity ingredient, not an inferior placeholder. A sodium fluoride toothpaste may be a straightforward cavity-prevention formula, or it may include other ingredients intended for sensitivity, tartar control, whitening, flavor, texture, or another purpose.
That means the comparison is rarely one isolated chemical against another isolated chemical. It is usually one complete product against another complete product. Two sodium fluoride toothpastes may differ from each other, just as two stannous fluoride toothpastes may differ from each other.
